Gorgon stage three tie-back gets first TechnipFMC Subsea 2.0 tree

TechnipFMC has delivered its first 7-in. Subsea 2.0 horizontal christmas tree to Chevron Australia for the Gorgon Stage 3 project, offshore in the north-west of WA.

TechnipFMC has delivered its first 7-in Subsea 2.0 horizontal christmas tree to Chevron Australia for the Gorgon stage three (GS3) offshore project in the north-west of Western Australia. The system, known as XT #1, was assembled at TechnipFMC’s facility in Nusajaya, Malaysia, and marks the first build of this particular configuration of the Subsea 2.0 platform. Horizontal christmas trees are subsea production systems used to manage the flow of oil and gas from wells on the seabed. TechnipFMC’s Subsea 2.0 platform is designed as a standardised and configurable system with a focus on efficiency and predictable execution for subsea developments. The company stated that this latest delivery expands the potential applications for the Subsea 2.0 platform and demonstrates readiness for wider deployment.

The GS3 project will connect the Geryon and Eurytion offshore natural gas fields to existing processing facilities through a backfill development. GS3 is the first in a planned series of subsea tie-back projects. TechnipFMC reported that it used early prototyping and cross-project knowledge integration to meet project deadlines. Teams across engineering, manufacturing and project management coordinated efforts to validate key interfaces ahead of schedule and manage a controlled first-article build. The company said the project involved contributions from its staff in Asia-Pacific, Europe and the Americas, reflecting a globally integrated approach.

The initial unit, known as a first-article build, serves to validate the design, manufacturing processes and integration before future serial production. Earlier this month, TechnipFMC secured a contract from Azule Energy to deliver flowlines and risers for the West Hub Tails project, an expansion of the Agogo Integrated Development in Block 15/06, offshore Angola. Azule Energy is a joint venture between Eni and bp.

The contract is described by TechnipFMC as “significant”, which the company defines as having a value between $75m (£55m) and $250m.
